Commentary: GO!
Hunting Island State Park campground is an idyllic natural getaway on one of South Carolina's barrier islands. We became so enamoured with it that we ended up staying a week in early November. Our dog, Sonya, was in heaven the entire time because we could take her on long walks on the beach and on the nature trails. We stayed at both a beachside and inland wooded site. We loved listening to the surf at the first one and the quietude of the other.
Highlights:
From easy-going to vigorous activities, Hunting Island State Park offers a range of fun recreation options. Sink into a beach chair and read or nap for hours. Go kayaking on the ocean. Hike or bike on nature trails. Fish in the surf or off a pier. Watch the sunset. Go birdwatching in the salt marshes. Take long walks on the beach. Climb to the top of the Hunting Island Lighthouse. Or swing in a hammock under palm trees. For dinner, cook up some fresh-out-of-the-water fish or shrimp bought at a local seafood market.

Considerations:
For sites near the beach and during holidays, reserve early. All sites are within walking distance of the beach. Heed the advice to keep all food in your RV, out of reach of the racoons. The snowbird winter special from late November to early March offers an attractive option to Florida and other points south.
