Commentary
Commentary: We spent three nights in early November in an oceanside site at Edisto Beach State Park. Although it rained and the wind was blustery, we topped warm sweaters with rain jackets and explored the beach. It's a favorite with fossil sleuths, and no wonder. David found fossilized shark teeth and pieces of turtle shell.
Highlights:
At Edisto Beach State Park, RVers can add fossil hunting to beachcombing, swimming and bird watching, hiking and other recreational activities. Salt marshes attract abundant birdlife. And ocean fishing adds to the seaside activities available. The park offers two delightful camping options: oceanside and inland under a canopy of live oaks. Visitors can also explore The Edisto Island National Scenic Byway, which runs from Dawhoo Landing to the Atlantic Ocean. Charming Charleston is only an hour drive away.
Location:
Edisto Beach State Park is located Edisto Island, a barrier island at the end of State Highway 174, south of Charleston, South Carolina.
Amenities:
- Dog-friendly ocean beach
- Fossil hunting
- Ocean fishing
- Interpretive Center and summer programs
- Nature trails
- Bird watching
- Boat Landing
- Water and electric hookups
- Dump stations in campground
- Clean bathhouses
Considerations:
For beach sites, reserve early. Consider the seasonal factors when choosing between beach and inland sites (temperature, winter winds, need for shade, bugs). Edisto Island water is fine for cooking and bathing, but for drinking water, either bring your own or fill up jugs at the police/fire/EMS station. The snowbird winter special from late November to early March offers an attractive option to Florida and other points south.
Area Attractions:
Edisto Island community; historic churches and live oak canopy on Edisto Island National Scenic Byway, and Charleston, South Carolina.
