Spending time with these kids in their classroom was a heart-warming experience. It brought back fond memories of when I was in my 20s and taught in a rural town in northeastern Brazil.
My Portuguese isn't as good as it was then, but the children humored me. We brought colored pencils and paper for them to make drawings of their favorite wildlife.
The classroom has a roof held up by wood posts, plastic sheeting to hang as wind and rain breakers, desks and a blackboard. Up to 20 children attend. Kids attend school until age 13 when they return home to follow in their parents' footsteps as homemakers and cowboys.
A cold front made the spring day chilly enough for jackets and sweaters.
